These tort actions are before us on exceptions to the direction of verdicts for the defendant.

At about 11 o'clock on the night of October 8, 1949 the plaintiff, Mrs. Robitaille, with two companions, was driving her husband's automobile southeasterly along Chaplin Street in Waterville on her way to the Hotel James, located on the west side of the street.
