On February 18, 1950, Jeddie Rice, an employee in the service department of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Inc., in Hampton, Virginia, was directed by his employer to deliver some merchandise to a customer. He left in his employer's pick-up truck to make the delivery and on the way he was asked by a friend, John Venable, to give his wife a ride home. Rice agreed and Mrs. Venable boarded the truck.
