On the morning of November 28, 1947, the Tug "Dispatch" was enroute eastward from Port Neches, Texas, pushing ahead of her three barges. The tug and barges were owned by the C. J. Dick Towing Company. The barges were the Bascomb W. Smith (in the lead), the Barge NBC 486 (in the middle), and the Barge Barrett J. Woods (the stern barge next to the tug).
