Gene Anderson, hereinafter called the defendant, was convicted by a jury of having seduced under promise of marriage, Mary Ellen Goff, an unmarried female of previous chaste character. Virginia Code, 1942, (Michie), section 4410. The verdict fixed his punishment at confinement in the penitentiary for two years.
