Defendant Joseph Maher, a man around forty years of age, who appeared at the trial a well-dressed, successful, and seemingly unusually intelligent and strong-willed individual, was the dominating figure in the conspiracy charged in this case, at least he was the dominating figure on the immediate scene. That scene was the polling place of the twenty-eighth precinct of the twelfth ward in Kansas City, and the time was Tuesday, November 3, 1936...
