The collision occurred on December 14, 1917, at about 2:50 a. m. in New York harbor between Staten Island and Norton's Point, while both steamers were at anchor. An 88 mile an hour gale was blowing at the time, and the question presented is whether the Pocahontas, dragging her anchor, drifted onto the San Tirso, or whether the latter, with her engines working in an effort to offset dragging, ran into the Pocahontas.
