On March 12, 1929, appellant shipped as a digester loader on the whaling ship "Lansing" for a whaling voyage to Magdalena Bay, Mexico. The voyage is described in the articles as follows:

"* * * From the Port of San Francisco, California, to Magdalena Bay, Mexico, and such other ports and places in any part of the Pacific Ocean as the master may direct on a whaling voyage and back to San Francisco, California, a final port of discharge...
