The petitioners were the owners of certain cargo that was lost from a lighter while being loaded thereon from the steamship Esperanza, owned by the Ward Line. Subsequent to this disaster an equity receiver was appointed for the Ward Line, and thereafter the petitioners filed in the receivership proceedings claims for cargo damage, asserting maritime liens against the Esperanza.
