This is a suit for cargo damage, brought by the owner of cargo loaded on the steamship Cohasset at New York, after having been transshipped to the Cohasset from the steamship West Calumb, which had been damaged by collision in the East River within a few minutes after leaving her dock. A number of other cases of cargo damage are stipulated to be tried upon the same evidence.

The defense is based on the third section of the Harter Act...
