The John Bakke was chartered for 12 months, by the appellant, from its owner, the appellee, to carry lawful merchandise in such lawful trades as the charterer should direct, including ports of the United States, West Indies, Carribean Seas, and Europe. The charter is dated May 9, 1925, and contains the following provisions material here:

"1. That the owners shall provide and pay for all provisions, wages, and consular shipping and discharging...
