It appears that on November 10, 1924, the steamship El Mundo was moored at a pier in the city of New York and that pipe fitters were at work in various parts of the vessel. On that day, at about 2:50 p. m., an explosion occurred in the starboard fuel oil tank, which was followed by a second explosion in the forward port tank.
