The defendant, Joe Nathan Smith, was charged by grand jury indictment with three counts of second degree murder, violations of LSA-R.S. 14:30.1. Pursuant to a plea agreement, the state reduced the charges and defendant pled guilty to three counts of manslaughter, violations of LSA-R.S. 14:31. Additionally, the state agreed to a sentencing cap of 30 years on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently. The district court sentenced defendant to serve...
