The defendant and codefendant Derrick Skipper were charged with the July 1, 2005, murder of John Riley. The defendant and codefendant Skipper had separate, but simultaneous trials, with the defendant opting for a jury trial and Skipper, a bench trial. Skipper is not a party to this appeal.
