On January 22, 1989, Brian Seabourn shot and killed Kenneth Lawton Stewart. In the years that followed, three men were held criminally accountable for Stewart's death. Petitioner Dennis Harold Lawley was tried, convicted of first degree murder with special circumstances, and sentenced to death for hiring Brian Seabourn and Steven Mendonca to kill Stewart.
