In 1985, Kenneth L. Harris was convicted in Missouri state court of a number of violent felonies committed on three separate occasions in July 1983 and was sentenced to thirty-five years in prison. He was paroled in 1995 and, in January 2000, while still on parole, he was arrested for, and later convicted of, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing cocaine base.
