This consolidated appeal is before us by order of the Michigan Supreme Court, 468 Mich. 851, 658 N.W.2d 490 (2003). The Supreme Court, in lieu of granting leave to appeal, remanded the cases with instructions to reconsider our previous decision1 in light of the rulings in Stanton v. Battle Creek, 466 Mich. 611, 647 N.W.2d 508
