Northrop Grumman Corporation ("Northrop") is the owner of U.S. Patent No. 4,453,229 ("the '229 patent"), entitled "Bus Interface Unit." The '229 patent issued in 1982. In late 2000, shortly before the patent expired, Northrop filed suit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against several defendants, including appellees 3Com Corporation and The Lynksys Group, Inc.
