Appellant Dale "J.R." Heidbreder, an Iowa resident, registered with the Minnesota Fathers' Adoption Registry 31 days after his former girlfriend Katie Carton gave birth to a girl, K.M.C. After registering, Heidbreder commenced a paternity action in Stearns County District Court in an attempt to block the pending adoption of K.M.C. in Minnesota.
