At about 8:30 P.M. on July 7, 1995, defendant's wife, who believed her husband had left their home in the City of Albany a few hours earlier, noticed smoke emanating from the drain of the kitchen sink. Local firefighters pinpointed its source as a pile of smoldering clothing and shoes in the basement.
