A jury convicted Keith D. Champlain of the murder1 of Sherri Reeves Vanlue. The trial court sentenced Champlain to sixty-five years in prison. In this direct appeal, Champlain presents several issues for our review. Because we reverse on the first question presented, we address only the following:
