Justice FREEMAN delivered the opinion of the court:

In 1985, petitioner, DeWayne C. Britz, was charged by information in Sangamon County with murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated criminal sexual assault, armed robbery, theft and concealment of a homicidal death. Following a jury trial, petitioner was convicted of all charges and sentenced to death. This court affirmed petitioner's conviction and sentence on direct appeal. People v. Britz,
