The litigation giving rise to this appeal results from an automobile accident. Defendant's fault in causing the accident was stipulated to prior to trial. In a bifurcated trial, the jury was first asked to determine the nature and extent of compensatory damages and whether defendant was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
