On December 23, 1992, Officer John Hardy of the Abbeville Police Department was shot once in the back of his head during a routine traffic stop. He died shortly thereafter. On January 15, 1993, defendant, Nadaedrick Campbell, a passenger in the vehicle Officer Hardy stopped, was indicted for first degree murder in violation of La.R.S. 14:30(A)(2).
