Joseph L. Lewis was charged by bill of information with distribution of cocaine, a violation of LSA-R.S. 40:967(A). Represented by counsel, he appeared for arraignment on October 11, 1993, and entered a plea of "not guilty". Trial commenced before a twelve person jury on April 12, 1994, and at the conclusion of the proceedings on the same day, the jury found Lewis guilty as charged.
