Lonnie Patterson brought this action under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 ("ERISA"), 29 U.S.C. §§ 1001-1461, seeking reinstatement of benefits that he had been receiving pursuant to Caterpillar's Monthly Disability Benefit Plan ("Plan").
