Four African-American women were impanelled at one point during the jury selection process in defendant's trial. Defendant is an African-American male. The People exercised peremptory challenges against three of the four potential jurors, the unchallenged woman being a civilian employed by the police department. Defense counsel immediately objected pursuant to Batson v Kentucky (476 U.S. 79).
