Defendant, Rodney Darjean, was charged by bill of indictment with first degree murder, a violation of La.R.S. 14:30. Defendant's bill of indictment was amended on March 7, 1994, charging the defendant with second degree murder, a violation of La.R.S. 14:30.1. The defendant withdrew a previous plea of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity and entered a plea of not guilty. Trial by jury began on March 15, 1994.
