The defendant was indicted in the circuit court of McLean County on six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a felony. (Ill.Rev.Stat.1989, ch. 38, par. 12-16(d).) The case proceeded to trial. Following the State's presentation of its case in chief, the defendant and the State began plea negotiations.
