On 5 June 1988, defendant was indicted for the first-degree murder of Joyce Varner, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury on William E. Leitch, and the first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon of Brian Shipp. Defendant was tried capitally in the Superior Court, Guilford County, in May 1990 and was found guilty of all charges.
