On September 1, 1987, as the complainant and her friends were eating lunch in a lower Manhattan restaurant, defendant removed the complainant's purse from her chair. Feeling a brush against her shoulder, complainant was alerted to the theft, and managed to wrest her purse away from defendant. Defendant ran from the restaurant, followed by one of the complainant's companions, as well as two police officers who saw the defendant emerge from the restaurant. A crowd of pedestrians...
