On January 6, 1986, in the early morning hours, Michael Thomas and other fire fighters responded to a fire alarm at 425 North King Street in Honolulu. In the course of extinguishing the fire, a portion of the ceiling of the burning building collapsed on Thomas causing a compound fracture of his right arm.
