On October 24, 1985, Annette Hinman was found injured at the bottom of a stairway in the basement of her apartment building in Nome. Hinman sued the owner of the building, Stanley Sobocienski, alleging that he was negligent in failing to maintain the stairway in a reasonably safe condition and that his negligence caused her injuries.
