Smith was convicted on numerous counts of conspiracy and bank fraud as a result of his criminal dealings with the Queen City Savings & Loan (Savings & Loan). The district court sentenced Smith to ten years in prison and ordered him to make restitution to the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation (FSLIC) in the amount of $12,792,160.
