Michael Ma, a citizen of the People's Republic of China, opened a money market account at Continental Bank N.A. on December 6, 1984, with a deposit of $150,000, transferred from Continental's subsidiary in Hong Kong, the same day a court of Hong Kong entered against Ma a judgment of HK $35 million, then equivalent to US $4.5 million.
