A jury found John Wheelwright (a previously convicted felon) guilty of unlawfully possessing firearms (1) on November 6, 1987, (2) on September 25, 1988, and (3) on August 3, 1989. 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1). The district court, applying the Federal Sentencing Guidelines to these convictions, determined that Wheelwright's "offense level" was 17, his criminal history category was III, and the Guidelines therefore called for imprisonment of 30 to...
