On May 31, 1989 the St. James Parish grand jury returned an indictment charging the defendant, Katherine Clayton, with second degree murder in violation of LSA-R.S. 14:30.1. At arraignment the defendant entered pleas of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity. A sanity commission was convened and defendant was found legally competent to proceed.
