Seeking to prevent self-inflicted life-threatening harm, a petition has been brought requesting the appointment of a guardian for John E. Garrett, a prisoner who expresses a wish to die. It is claimed that the appointment of a guardian is authorized in this instance because Mr. Garrett is suffering from a "mental infirmity" — a depressive disorder — so grave that he is "unable properly to manage and care for his person...
