On January 28, 1987, two Milwaukee police officers stopped a car driven by Robert McCarty, a convicted felon. In his car, the officers found a handgun. A grand jury indicted McCarty on one count of possessing a firearm after having been convicted of a felony, 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1).
