The plaintiff Wayne Metz, age fifty-four, was discharged by his employer, defendant Transit Mix, Inc., after twenty-seven years of employment with the company. He alleges that he was fired in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act ("ADEA"), 29 U.S.C.A. §§ 621-634 (West 1985 & Supp.1987). Following a bench trial, the district court entered judgment for Transit Mix, 646 F.Supp. 286
