In a retrial following a reversal of an initial conviction, the appellant, Thomas Wilson, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. Wilson's direct appeal, which raised a number of issues, was rejected by the Alabama Supreme Court. In late 1984, Wilson filed a habeas corpus petition in federal district court.
