In 1983 the appellant pleaded guilty in a federal district court in Wisconsin to several counts of violating federal banking and fraud laws and was sentenced to prison for four years; he is currently in a federal prison in Minnesota. The presentence report stated that the violations had resulted in a loss of $3.3 million to the banks that were defrauded.
