The plaintiff's husband, Dr. N. Richard Namay, served as a physician for the city of Lowell, the county of Middlesex, and the Commonwealth. In 1971, while on duty at the Billerica house of correction, Dr. Namay was beaten by an inmate, and he subsequently suffered a disabling heart attack.
