Steven J. Meaux, a probationary fireman in Lake Charles, was hit by a car driven by Pamela K. Humphrey. Meaux's unit had stopped to render assistance to two deputy sheriffs who were extinguishing a fire in a stalled pickup truck. Meaux sued Ideal Mutual Insurance Company (Ideal), insurer of the Sheriff's Department, for damages allegedly caused by the negligence of the two deputies.
