In New York Times Company v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254, 84 S.Ct. 710, 11 L.Ed.2d 686 (1964), the United States Supreme Court held that the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution limits the right of a public official to recover damages for defamatory falsehoods relating to his official conduct.
