Plaintiff's suit was precipitated by his injury in the course and scope of his employment as a derrickman on a drilling rig owned by Jett Drilling Company, a subsidiary of Transcontinental Drilling Company. His injury occurred as he was performing a maintenance function on one of the rig's mud pumps which circulate the drilling mud into the hole to lubricate the drill bit.
