A jury found that Smith International, Inc. entered an oral contract with John C. Higgins to employ him for two years at $42,000 per year, and then breached it by dismissing him six months into the contract without adequate justification. The district court initially entered judgment on the verdict; some time later, it granted Smith International's motion for a remittitur and entered a superseding judgment reducing Higgins' damage award.
