On July 30, 1981, the defendants, Edward Ackal, Ed Thompson and Henry Smith, were charged in a ten-count indictment with violations of 18 U.S.C. §§ 371, 372, 1341, 1342, 1343, 1951 and 1952. Count 9 of the indictment, charging violations of 1951 and 1952, was severed prior to trial. The remaining counts were tried before a jury, and the jury returned guilty verdicts against...
