In July of 1977, the defendant-appellant Vincent Howze was convicted of a felony (forgery of a United States treasury check). On July 30, 1980 Howze pled guilty in an Illinois state court to a criminal misdemeanor charge of theft under $150.00, admitting the theft of a Colt revolver.
