The petitioners were charged in Seattle Municipal Court with offenses involving possible sentences of 6 months in jail and a $500 fine. Filson was charged with menacing, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and obstructing a public officer. Barlish was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants or drugs and the infraction of speeding. In each case a jury of 12 was demanded and denied.
