Bobby Joe Mitchell was convicted of first degree murder in Ashley County, Arkansas, in March of 1969. That conviction was based on a plea of guilty and Mitchell was sentenced to life imprisonment. After Mitchell's conviction he served a sentence in the Wisconsin State Prison. During that time he inquired of the Ashley Circuit Court regarding an appeal.
